Elisha Winn was not only one of the first settlers in Gwinnett County; he was also its founding father. He built the Elisha Winn house in 1805 near Hog Mountain on Dacula Road and it served as the county’s first courthouse. For more than 100 years the Elisha Winn house was occupied and cared for. Today, thanks to the Gwinnett Historical Society, the Winn house has been completely renovated to look the way it did in 1870.

It was also Winn who provided the land to create Lawrenceville, the county seat. The Georgia legislature officially created Gwinnett County in 1818 from Cherokee lands and a part of Johnson County. It was named after Button Gwinnett, one of Georgia’s three signers of the Declaration of Independence. Dacula, formerly known as “Hoke,” was founded in 1891 as a temporary camp during construction of the Seaboard Railroad. Today, Dacula enjoys the same accelerated rate of growth as the surrounding county. It has become a desirable destination for anyone looking for a small-town environment with quick access to a big city.

Dacula residents enjoy close proximity not only to Atlanta but to all the numerous Gwinnett County attractions as well.
